Coaching at the Inflection Point®

“Great leaders draw lasting lessons from transforming events.” Bruce Pasternack and James O’Toole, quoted in Strategy & Business

The Premise

All individuals go through points in their business and personal lives where a change at the margin of their behaviors is both more possible and can create great benefit. These critical junctures, or “Teachable Moments™,” are important times, because it is at these times that one has a special opportunity to separate success from failure. Such inflection points may include:

  • A career advancement
  • When your superior judges your performance to be less than adequate, or
  • When your new job requires a different set of skills e.g., when one changes from a professional rank (doctor, scientist, lawyer, engineer, or a skilled tradesman) to a manager of such individuals
  • When your personal life changes through marriage, divorce, loss or a spouse or close loved one
The Elements

Our Coaching at the Inflection Point® process identifies and assists in improving those specific skills and behaviors which will materially and measurably improve an individual’s substantive and/or behavioral performance in a relatively short period of time. The initial process may include individual coaching, or assessing personality type and/or individual and team behavior through interviews, 360-degree surveys, and/or assessment instruments such as the MBTI and ECI (EQ).

Skill Sets

Coaching at the Inflection Point® can improve the following skill sets:

  • Managing upward, downward, and/or peer relationships
  • Interpersonal skills, especially dealing with managing through influence and negotiation
  • Delegation skills
  • Creating and managing change
  • Time management
  • Presentation skills
  • Managing outside resources

Can Coaching at the Inflection Point® Help You?

You may be experiencing a critical Teachable Moment™, one where Coaching at the Inflection Point® can help if:

  • Your boss suggests that you “could use help”
  • You ask the important question, “What can I do to improve?”
  • Your reviews consistently suggest areas of improvement, but you can’t seem to make progress with regard to those areas
  • You feel your career has or is leveling out
  • You are suddenly blind-sided by a demotion or a highly unfavorable review
  • You are passed over for an important new position you thought you should have gotten
  • You have a “gut” feeling that something is just not right with your career
  • Your spouse suggests you have problems in interpersonal relationships
  • You see a potential or Teachable Moment™ on the horizon
Why Use Our Coaching at the Inflection Point® Process?

Because in today's world, the pressure on all managers to perform is ever increasing due to shorter cycle times, broader spans of control, increased competitive pressures, better information more quickly delivered, and because every leader and manager goes through critical junctures where change is both possible and rewarded. Conversely, these Teachable Moments™ don't happen very often, and thus create both challenges and rare opportunities.
